Designed for teachers with EL/ML learners who are classified as newcomers, the EL/ML Educator Toolkit: Newcomer Supplement supports high-quality, data-informed instruction and assessment. This digital download is focused on learners who are foreign born and recently arrived and is meant to enhance the information provided in the EL/ML Educator Toolkit 1.0.
Toolkit includes:
- Infographics & Tip Sheets: Helps identify the unique characteristics of newly arrived English learners. Explore useful information to share with newcomer families about school, transportation, and educational processes. Special care was taken to engage feedback from each ethnic group during the development of the infographics to enhance accuracy and capture the native language perspective for each resource.
- English Language Performance Measure: These locally delivered and locally scored performance tasks provide educators with immediate feedback on the current performance of English learners in each of the four language domains. This information provides a snapshot of where EL/MLs are performing and can be used to help guide instruction. Performance tasks provide directions for use, transcripts for teachers to read aloud, and scaffolding questions.
- Student Profile Resource: Supports educators in gathering relevant information for each learner; includes sample profiles representative of newcomers. The student’s home language and past formal education experience create a vital snapshot of your English learner’s background. Using the collected information, collaborate with EL/ML support staff to develop an instructional plan that best matches the student’s needs.
The EL Educator Toolkit: Newcomer Supplement is based on research and reflection carried out nationwide by teachers, learning specialists, district coordinators, and other education experts.
